In Nepal, gender inequality and social exclusion are deeply established challenges, further worsened by geographic, economic, and environmental factors. Vulnerable groups—including women, children, people with disabilities, sexual and gender minorities, and marginalized communities such as Dalits and indigenous peoples—face significant barriers to education, economic opportunities, and social participation. This disparity is especially evident in regions like Madhesh Province, where the gender gap in literacy rates is wide, and women bear a disproportionate burden of unpaid care work, dedicating 85 percent of daily hours to these tasks compared to just 15 percent by men.
To combat these issues, Shequal Foundation is actively working to address gender inequality and discrimination by challenging traditional gender norms and fostering change among youth. Our ongoing campaign across five districts of Madhesh Province involves a comprehensive workshop using an interactive participatory approach. This includes a self-assessment tool focusing on Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI), household chores, sports, and mental health. The curriculum encourages students to critically analyze and challenge traditional gender roles, helping them identify biases and implement practical behavior changes in their daily lives.
